Meet Ebony Payne, an entrepreneur and herbalist based in Washington, DC. Discover how working with Catherine helped her go from feeling exhausted and overcommitted to feeling renewed energy and business success.

Before she began coaching

  • Before she began working with Catherine, Ebony felt drained from juggling multiple business endeavors: a full-time marketing job; a massage therapy practice; and an herbal product startup called District Herbs.
  • She was working seven days a week, with no end in sight.
  • Despite how hard she worked, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she wasn’t making progress on the things that mattered to her most.

Why coaching?

Ebony turned to Catherine for help prioritizing her goals.

  • It became clear that her true passion lay with District Herbs, but committing to that passion meant letting other things go — and that felt impossible.
  • Ebony was weighed down with guilt about “abandoning” her massage clients and fear about breaking the lease on the space she used for massage therapy. She also worried about what people would think of her for having a business, District Herbs, that integrated cannabis into its products.

Her first breakthrough

On their very first call, Catherine helped Ebony experience a breakthrough. After a lot of prodding, Ebony picked up the phone, called her landlord, and negotiated an early end to her lease.

She immediately felt like a weight had been lifted, which was the sign she needed that she made the right decision. The worry that she was holding about abandoning her clients was alleviated with her belief that through District Herbs she would be helping her wider community.

“Catherine helped me to do in one consultative session what I had been talking about doing for the past two years. It was then that I knew I wanted to hire her as my life coach,” Ebony says of that first phone call.

Life after coaching

Today, Ebony is happily running District Herbs full-time, and is enjoying the increased energy that comes from focusing on running a business that she is truly passionate about.

She and her business partner have expanded the company’s product offerings — from medicinal teas to classes in herbal medicine. Their ultimate mission: Educating the community and empowering individuals with an understanding of herbal medicine’s role in everyday self care.

The coaching process wasn’t easy, Ebony notes. It involved confronting, and sitting with, some uncomfortable truths. But Catherine was there with her every step of the way. And now, on the other side, she is experiencing the ultimate reward: Feeling empowered to create the life she truly wants.

Ebony’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is this:

“Obstacles are an inevitable part of business and an opportunity for growth. Surround yourself with people you can trust and make sure you’re doing something you love. You’re going to need the passion to get you through those times where you might doubt yourself.”

Asked if she would recommend life coaching to others, Ebony says, “Do it. Working with a life coach can help you gain clarity and create tangible results. It will take you to the next level.”
